A 5-star AC saves you money on electricity. A 5-star AC also costs more upfront and still comes with the same repair-cost risk as everything else. Here's the math nobody walks you through at the showroom.

The showroom pitch you've heard before

"Get the 5-star one — it'll save you on your electricity bill."

It's true. It's also only half the story, and the half that gets left out is usually the more expensive half.

What the star rating actually measures

The BEE star rating (1 to 5 stars) measures the ISEER — how efficiently a unit converts electricity into cooling. A higher rating means lower running cost per hour of use. That part is real and worth understanding.

What the star rating does not tell you:

  • Whether the unit will need a gas top-up in year 3
  • Whether the PCB is covered after year one
  • What a service visit will cost you in year 4
  • Whether your warranty is comprehensive or "compressor-only" after the first 12 months

Star rating is an efficiency number. It has nothing to do with repair costs, warranty structure, or what happens after the sale — and those are usually the bigger expenses over the life of the unit.

The upfront cost gap is real

A 5-star unit typically costs several thousand rupees more upfront than an equivalent 3-star model in the same tonnage. That premium is meant to pay for itself through electricity savings over time.

Here's the part that rarely gets mentioned: depending on usage hours per day, it can take 5 to 7 years of running the AC daily before the electricity savings actually offset that higher upfront cost. For a household that runs the AC 4–5 months a year rather than year-round, that payback period stretches out even further.

None of this means 5-star is a bad choice — for heavy, year-round users in hot climates, it can make sense. It means the star rating alone doesn't tell you which option is cheaper for you, over the years you'll actually own it.

The bigger number both ratings ignore

Whether you buy 3-star or 5-star, the standard industry warranty structure is the same: one year comprehensive, then compressor-only. Which means both a 3-star and a 5-star unit carry the same exposure to:

  • Gas top-ups (₹2,500 – ₹4,500)
  • PCB replacement (₹4,000 – ₹8,000)
  • Paid service visits over 5–7 years

This is usually a bigger swing in total cost than the difference between star ratings — and it's the one variable that's completely independent of efficiency rating.

  2. What's the upfront price difference, and how many years of running the AC would it take to earn that back in savings?
  3. What does the warranty cover after year one, regardless of star rating — because that risk exists either way.

Star rating matters. It's just not the only number that decides what an AC actually costs you.
