The Real Cost of a "Cheap" AC: What Nobody Tells You Before You Buy

The sticker price is a decoy
Walk into any showroom and the conversation starts and ends with one number: the price on the box. ₹34,000. ₹38,000. ₹42,000. Whoever has the lowest number that day usually wins the sale.
But that number was never the real cost of owning the AC. It was just the entry fee.
What "1 year comprehensive" actually means
Almost every AC in India — regardless of brand — ships with the same warranty structure: one year comprehensive, and then a much thinner extended warranty that only covers the compressor. Everything else — gas, PCB, service visits, labour — quietly becomes your problem starting year two.
Most buyers don't read this far into the fine print. Most salespeople don't bring it up.
Here's what tends to show up over the life of a typical unit:
- Gas top-ups: ₹2,500 – ₹4,500 per refill, often needed within 3–4 years
- PCB replacement: ₹4,000 – ₹8,000, a common failure point once the compressor-only warranty kicks in
- Paid service visits: ₹500 – ₹1,500 per visit, and they add up over 5–7 years
- Installation "extras": copper piping, stabilizers, and mounting charges that weren't in the original quote
None of this is dishonest, exactly. It's just structured so you don't see it until you're already a customer.
The real 5-year math
Based on average Indian household AC ownership patterns, a unit that looked ₹4,000 cheaper at purchase can end up costing significantly more over five years once repairs, gas top-ups, and service visits are added in. The "expensive" option at the showroom and the "cheap" one often land in the same place — or the cheap one costs more.
The 5-star unit whose warranty quietly expires in year 3. The technician visit that isn't free because the fine print said "compressor only." The gas refill in year 4 that costs ₹4,500. That's the part of AC ownership nobody shows you before you buy.
Why this happens
It isn't really about any one brand being dishonest. It's about how the industry is structured: manufacturing and after-sales service are usually run by completely different teams, sometimes different companies altogether. The people who sell you the AC have no visibility into — and often no financial stake in — what happens to you after year one.
That gap is where most of the hidden cost lives.
What to actually check before you buy
Next time you're comparing units, skip the price tag for a minute and ask three questions instead:
- What exactly does the warranty cover after year one? Ask for it in writing — not verbally.
- Who provides the after-sales service — the brand, or a third-party franchise? This affects how quickly and how well you're taken care of.
- What's excluded? Gas charging and PCB failure are the two most commonly excluded items — and the two most likely to happen.
If a brand can't answer these clearly, that's the answer.
The Heuser approach
We built Heuser Air One because we spent years running the after-sales side of this industry through Servsy — fixing ACs from every major brand, in real homes, every day. We saw exactly where the hidden costs come from, because we were the ones collecting the paid service visit fees.
That's why every Heuser Air One Founder Edition comes with Heuser Care+ — 7 years of coverage on parts, labour, gas, and service visits, with no compressor-only fine print. Not because it's generous, but because we already run the service network that makes it possible to promise.
The real cost of an AC isn't what's on the box. It's what happens for the next seven years after you bring it home.
