What it requires that people often underestimate:

  • A relatively short, straight duct run — long or heavily bent ducting reduces suction efficiency significantly
  • An external wall to duct into at all — a problem for interior kitchens, mid-floor apartments, or kitchens positioned away from any outer wall

  2. Suction capacity (m³/hr) — this determines how much air is being cycled through the filter per hour, regardless of duct or no duct
  3. Filter replacement cycle and cost — carbon filters in recirculating chimneys are consumable and need periodic replacement, unlike the washable mesh filters common in ducted systems
  4. Motor type — BLDC motors generally run quieter and more efficiently than older AC induction motors, which matters more in a ductless design where the same air keeps circulating through the room
