Low electricity bill" is a promise every AC ad makes. Here's how to actually calculate what your AC will cost you per month — with real numbers, not vague claims.

"Saves electricity" is not a number

Every AC brand claims efficiency. Almost none of them help you translate that into what you'll actually see on your electricity bill at the end of the month. Here's how to do that calculation yourself, with any AC you're considering.

The formula, in plain terms

Running cost depends on three things: how much power the unit draws, how many hours you run it, and what you pay per unit of electricity.

Power consumption (kW) × Hours used per day × Days per month × Electricity rate (₹/unit) = Monthly cost

The tricky part is the first number — power consumption isn't fixed on an inverter AC, since the compressor runs at variable speed rather than a constant draw. But you can get a reasonable estimate using the unit's rated power consumption, which manufacturers list alongside the ISEER rating.

A worked example

Take a 1.5 ton, 3-star inverter AC with a rated power consumption of roughly 1.5 kW (this varies by exact model, so always check the specific unit's label):

  • Running 8 hours a day: 1.5 kW × 8 hours = 12 kWh (units) per day
  • Over a 30-day month: 12 × 30 = 360 units
  • At an average residential rate of ₹7–8 per unit (varies significantly by state): 360 × ₹7.5 ≈ ₹2,700/month

This is an estimate, not a guarantee — actual consumption shifts with room size, outdoor temperature, insulation, and how well the unit is sized for the room (which is why correct sizing affects your bill as much as star rating does).

Why ISEER matters in this calculation

ISEER (Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures cooling output delivered per unit of electricity consumed across a full season, not just at one moment. A higher ISEER means more cooling for the same power draw. When comparing two ACs of the same tonnage, the one with the higher ISEER will generally show a lower number in the calculation above — that's the practical, bill-level meaning of the rating.

Where your actual bill will differ from the estimate

A few real-world factors shift the number in either direction:

  • Set temperature — running at 24°C draws less power than running at 18°C, since the compressor works harder to reach and hold a lower target
  • Room insulation and sun exposure — a top-floor room under direct sun demands more cooling effort to maintain the same temperature
  • Usage pattern — inverter ACs are more efficient with longer, steady runtime than frequent short bursts, since much of the startup draw happens in the first several minutes
  • Filter maintenance — a dirty filter restricts airflow, forcing the compressor to work harder for the same output
  • State electricity tariffs — residential rates vary meaningfully across Indian states and even slab-based within a state

A quick way to sanity-check any brand's claims

Before trusting an ad claiming "up to 60% electricity savings," ask for the specific rated power consumption figure (in kW) on the energy label, not just the star rating. Run the calculation above using your own actual daily hours and local tariff. Marketing percentages are usually accurate under specific lab test conditions, but your actual monthly number depends entirely on your own usage pattern.
